Heyall!
I hope that the past few months have been treating you well. I just wanted to let you guys know about this awesome project that I’m coordinating this week.

At this year’s Midwest Fil-Am Summit 2013 (MAFA Conference), we will be creating a mural in collaboration with Eliseo Art Silva. Mr. Silva is a world-renowned muralist. He is recognized for painting the largest Filipino-American mural in the U.S. in commemoration of the Centennial of the Philippine Revolution against Spain. The mural measures 145 feet x 25 feet and is called Gintong Kasaysayan, Gintong Pamana” (Filipino Americans: A Glorious History, A Golden Legacy).

Mr. Silva has offered to design a mural for us that embodies the ideas of personal and communal identity that lie at the core of the summit. This mural will center on the theme of heroes, or Bayani. People can submit photos of their own personal heroes. Mr. Silva will then draft a mural that contains images of both personal heroes to the students and important Filipino heroes.

Criteria
1. Students must submit a piece of artwork that embodies the theme of Bayani. This can be personal heroes or Filipino/Filipino American heroes. Students can submit a portrait photo or draw/paint a symbol. BE CREATIVE!
2. All artwork MUST include a paragraph explaining who the person is and what impact they have on your personal growth or the community. Be creative and poetic.
3. All artwork must be emailed to fasomadison@gmail.com by Fri, January 18th.

How it works
After submission and review, Mr. Silva will compile a final composition and color scheme. We will then create a panel and create a paint by numbers piece. At the summit, groups will come in throughout the day to paint (no experience needed). The finished product will be unveiled that day.
In addition, the paragraph submissions will be compiled into a book that will serve to complement the mural.

Our Purpose
Eliseo states, “We need to advance what has already been achieved; we stand on the shoulders of those that came before us so we can move forward our collective visions and dreams for our emergent national identity.” Bayani is a commemoration of our collective experiences and the people who have defined it. The creation of this public art is our chance to redefine our cultural history and narrative.

Occupy Chicago Protests--- Burning Voter Registration forms:

Hey all, I hope everyone’s been good with school and what not!

So some Occupy Chicago people have been burning their voter reg forms in front of Obama’s headquarters to protest the electoral system. Now, while I would agree that there’s a lot of corruption in government and the system, I just don’t agree with their method of protest. Burning voter registration cards? That bothers me so much! The right to vote is a privilege that so many people simply do not have because of racial systemic oppression, as there has been and still is so much voter suppression occurring. People have fought and died for the right to vote! To burn your right to vote away in protest is disrespectful to hardships, sacrifices, and efforts of the past and present!

How to tell your friends from the Japs’ in TIME, 1941 vs. ‘Turban Primer’ in RedEye, 2012:

My friend sent me this link the other day of the comparison between two articles published almost 70 years apart about religious/cultural distinctions between groups based on physical appearances for the purpose of telling categorizing people. I found it extremely interesting that the article about Sikh men, after the shooting in a WIS Sikh temple occurred, was published - regardless of the intent of the article to promote cultural awareness, it just doesn’t sit right at all.

Our two supervisors took Mansi and me out to lunch on Tuesday! We ended up going to this place called Udupi Palace. It was an early farewell lunch for us as interns, and I got to try something new again! Ever since working at the Indo-American Center, I’ve been constantly immersed in new Indian dishes. It is really one of the greatest things in life ever. Haha.

In light of this Dark Knight Aurora shooting, a lot of opinions from psychologists, politicians, and other people have been voiced throughout the media.

Who do you listen to when everyone is talking?

I’ve read dozens of articles on the internet, have listened to multiple radio talk shows, and have seen reports on the tv about this incident. All of these things spoke of important issues, but none of them really spoke to me… until I read this article on CNN:

“The overwhelming maleness of mass homicide”

“In the United States… young white males (between age 14 and 24) represent only 6% of the population, yet commit almost 17% of the murders. For young black males, the numbers are even more alarming (1.2% of the population accounting for 27% of all homicides). Together, these two groups of young men make up just 7% of the population and 45% of the homicides. Overall, 90% of all violent offenders are male, as are nearly 80% of the victims.”

To me, these statistics speak more than words.

As leaders of our generation, how can we target these young white and black males to stop the violence?
Spoiler Alert:
It shouldn’t take the Dark Knight to creep up from the shadows and bring light to these issues- both in the sense of the movie and the Aurora shooting. It takes a community to rise (not just the Dark Knight [lol @ pun]) and come together to help bring justice to society by preventing these young males from committing these crimes.

My supervisor, Theresa Mah, is especially proud of this because she has been working on getting this passed for a year.

Amends the State Employment Records Act. Provides that each State agency shall include in its annual report a description of the agency’s activities in implementing the State Asian Employment Plan. Amends the Department of Central Management Services Law. Provides that in consultation with knowledgeable persons and organizations, the Department shall each year prepare an Asian Employment Plan and report to the General Assembly each State agency’s activities that implement the plan. Provides that each State agency shall implement strategies and programs in accord with the State Asian Employment Plan to increase the number of Asian State employees in supervisory, technical, professional, and managerial positions. Requires each agency to report annually to the Department and the Department of Human Rights concerning the agency’s activities in implementing the plan. Specifies information to be included in each agency’s annual report. Effective immediately.

Hey guys!

I know I’m a bit late on posting this but this past Saturday was the Chinatown Dragon Boat Race and the CASL fellows were doing voters registration at the event. A few of my friends were competing with the Chicago Fitness Challenge and it turned out that they were short a member so they were awesome and let me row with them!

Thanks to Bao Lin for taking the pictures.

Victoria, Bao Lin and our volunteers were also amazing and registered 45 voters!

So i just heard about this story and it was crazy and awesome at the same time. So pretty much what happened was Michelle Bachmann accused Huma Abedin, Chief of Staff to Hillary Clinton, of having family members in the Muslim Brotherhood and Senator McCain spoke up against Michelle Bachmann and defended Huma.

Undocumented Apparel

Heyo! Joan here again.
I’ve been scooping out some interesting articles on the Colorlines website.
The above pictures are of “Undocumented Apparel” (left), which is a backlash to American Apparel’s (right) recent ad in which they use a “‘California Farmer’ As [an] Accessory in [an] Ad.”

What do you think about both pictures? If you were American Apparel, what would you have done differently so as not to accessorize and therefore dehumanize a human being?
